Featured this week, just barely, is: a wildly crazy April Fool’s show at Church (Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, Mighty Tiny, HUMANWINE, and Somerville Symphony Orkestar); dance night on Friday at Great Scott, with special live guests The Daily Pravda; a Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling CD release party at Church on Saturday; and for folk/Americana fans – a CD release party at the Middle East for Kingsley Flood, which also features the very popular Boston Americana group, Cassavettes.

Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, Mighty Tiny, and HUMANWINE I’ve spoken of before here, and they’re all very, very worth seeing individually, never mind together (which is completely, utterly nuts, and trust me you will be spinning like you’ve just stepped off some harrowing carnival ride – but it’ll be well worth it). So I’ll just say a few words about the Somerville Symphony Orkestar. If anyone out there is familiar with fellow Boston band Hypnotic Clambake, that’ll land you in the general neighborhood. Punk, Klezmer, Balkan, Russian, and funk influences. A crazy, festive stew that must be pretty spectacular in a live setting. This is seriously one hell of a lineup.

I was looking for something on Friday that would be a departure from the cabaret bizarre of April Fool’s at Church, the down-home rootsiness of Kingsley Flood, and the punk/industrial sonic deep cleanse of Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling… and I’ve found it. The Daily Pravda are charmingly new wave and glam (Yes! Glam!), and from the brief listening I’m giving them now, quite good (“She’s So Mature” is especially nice, kinda glam/garage). How glam are they? Well, they do a loving tribute to “Ziggy Stardust” which – given my past history – made me chuckle. In a happy way. In fact, it’s such a faithful rendition, and this band has such a strong Bowie vibe, it’s almost too close, if you know what I mean. Maybe it’s just me, but if a band is going to cover a dearly-loved classic like this, I want it to be truly bizarre. Like Barbara Streisand doing “Life On Mars”. Ok, maybe not like that. So anyway, their appearance at Great Scott is part of their Friday Night The Pill dance party (“Britpop, Modern indie & Beyond”), and is also the release party for their single “Animal Nitrate”, copies of which will be given away for free. The Daily Pravda have two other releases – the She’s So Mature EP and last year’s debut album Burning Bible Diamonds.

Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, another band whom I’ve written about before are having a CD release party for their debut album. Pleasantly pummeling and hypnotic, the duo of Sophia Cacciola (formerly of Blitzkriegbliss!) on vocals & drums and Mike Epstein (The Motion Sick) on bass, whip up quite a churning racket. This evening, they’re joined by punk/pop singer from NYC, Cory TuT; new wave & 80s synth-pop Vostok 4 (nice), Gene Dante and The Future Starlets (sort of a theatrical 70s glam meets Neil Diamond), and hard rock/gothic/metal quartet Voodoo Screw Machine, who apparently stage theatrical blitzkriegs for their live shows (that have been banned from at least two Boston-area clubs), so it’s probably good they’re on last.

Last, but definitely not least – especially for fans of exceptional “indie Americana” and crazy pickin’ and fiddlin’, Kingsley Flood will be having a CD release party for their debut album Dust Windows. The band features Naseem Khuri on acoustic guitar & vocals, Nick Balkin on bass, Will Davies, drums; George Hall, guitar, Jenée Morgan, fiddle; and Chris Barrett, trumpet. There’s folk and singer-songwriter influences (Woody Guthrie, Dylan); Americana and roots music a la the Band; and more rocking stuff like The Replacements. They have a cool sound, and you can listen to the songs from the new album (and download a few tracks) on their official site. Also performing this evening will be the highly-acclaimed Americana Boston band Cassavettes (who have a new CD Shake Down The Sun), The Grownup Noise, and Spouse (from Portland).
