This year’s Boston Music Awards (a.k.a. the BMAs) will be presented on Sunday, December 5 at the Liberty Hotel, and is a fine excuse to host a bunch of cool bands. Performing will be the legendary Barry & The Remains, Lynn-based hip-hop artist M-Dot, 60’s girl group lovers Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, synth-poppers from Worcester DOM, the Americana/folk band Kingsley Flood, and more (see full list below). Tickets can be purchased from BrownPaperTickets.com for just the show, or VIP tickets which include a cocktail reception. Presented by Music Drives Us and TimeOut Boston. Proceeds will benefit the Music Drives Us foundation. And don’t forget to VOTE for your favorites. You can see the list of nominees and VOTE NOW at the BMA site. Voting closes at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29th. Shameless plugs follow for a few of my faves…

Artisan’s Asylum ~ A New Open-Access Community Workshop in Somerville

ArtisansAsylum
Here’s something very cool for all you creative types. Artist’s Asylum is a newly opened non-profit community workshop (with facilities on Windsor St. and Joy St. in Somerville) whose mission is to “make creativity a way of life.”

They’re gathering skilled artisans from the Boston area to teach classes of all kinds, including precision metal machining, woodworking, welding, fabricwork, painting, photography, and much more. Currently they’re taking a survey to see what types of classes people in the community would be most interested in. Visit their site for more information, take the survey, and get involved!

There’s so much great music to check out this week, I can only touch on some of it. See listings on the sidebar for more, and please let me know if I’m missing something interesting (I frequently do). We’ve got two FREE daytime concert series in four different locations, presented by arts organizations around Cambridge. Somerville has their annual Art Beat happening Friday and Saturday in Davis Square. And there’s interesting shows (and a few new album releases) coming up with Laura Jorgensen and Nature In The City; Rob Potylo and HUMANWINE; and Sarah RabDAU and Goli.

The Boston Rock BBQ at The Bridge Sound and Stage ~ May 30, 2010

RockBBQ08

I’m not usually in the habit of reviewing parties, but I must make an exception in this case and say a few words. It was a ridiculously cool event put on by Boston-area bloggers – Boston Band Crush, Bradley’s Almanac, Exploit Boston!, Playground Boston, Ryan’s Smashing Life, Tea Party Boston, Zed Equals Zee, and Agent Bishop Productions – and hosted by the fine folks at the extremely classy production facility The Bridge Sound and Stage (formerly home to the legendary Fort Apache Studios).

Food Not Bombs 30th Anniversary Celebration on Boston Common – tomorrow! (Sun, May 23)

FoodNotBombs30th

Last minute notice, but the highly respected, awesome Boston organization Food Not Bombs are celebrating their 30th Anniversary (dubbed “Soupstock”) with a huge celebration on Boston Common tomorrow, May 23, from 12-5pm.

Food Not Bombs was born out of a collective in Boston/Cambridge in the early 80′s and has since spread all over the world. They’ve been providing free (delicious and vegan) food to Boston area people and helping the homeless for all these years. A very, very worthy cause, so get down to the Boston Common and show your support!

New Boston Club: The Royale opening night.. tonight!

Royale-300

Ok, just a quickie here to introduce a new club I’ve just found out about this week. It’s called The Royale, and it’s on the site of the old Roxy, at 279 Tremont Street. You can read more about it (and see a few photos). Their grand opening is tonight, with a live performance by Tyson Ritter (from The All American Rejects) and “special guests”. Never mind about the mention of “Playboy events” – this is a new 800-capacity rock venue, folks, in downtown Boston, and one of the bands scheduled for May 4 & 5 is Public Image Limited. So definitely a club to keep an eye on. And I will.
