The 2010 Boston Music Awards Odyssey @ The Liberty Hotel

Holy moly, what an overwhelming (and fantastic) experience. Never in my life have I been to something quite like this. Musicians and music fans, hipsters, scenesters, photographers and bloggers… a wild circus of sights and sounds, with my buddies Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys appropriately holding court in the lobby with grandeur, party favors, boobs and bubbles, as only they can (sadly, they didn’t win ‘Live Artist of the Year’, but no matter – they’re playing First Night!). Confronted by a total sensory overload, I became a sort of comatose bloodhound in search of great live music. And happily found it everywhere.

Two Three interesting events to profile this week. The first is actually a three-day musical extravaganza to celebrate The Boston Phoenix’s Best Music Poll, with some very cool local bands in free performances at Downtown Crossing. This includes everything from psychedelic to lo-fi punk, synth-propelled New Wave and dance, indie pop, folk, and Americana. Secondly and a late addition because I just realized they’re performing at the Milky Way in JP Friday night, Audrey Ryan and Shepherdess, two highly talented singer-songstresses. The third promises to be a fun and adventurous evening of cabaret and music from Bent Wit Cabaret. They present a full collaborative theatrical production on the second Sunday of every month at OBERON in Cambridge (Harvard Square). For this particular show (“Identity”) which commemorates the end of Pride Week, they’ll be exploring race, sex, and gender, with lots of music, from rock to jazz to pop.

Featured this week, just barely, is: a wildly crazy April Fool’s show at Church (Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, Mighty Tiny, HUMANWINE, and Somerville Symphony Orkestar); dance night on Friday at Great Scott, with special live guests The Daily Pravda; a Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling CD release party at Church on Saturday; and for folk/Americana fans – a CD release party at the Middle East for Kingsley Flood, which also features the very popular Boston Americana group, Cassavettes.

A busy time with lots of things to write about, so for now, I’m just going to mention this one Boston-area band event going on at Church. However, it’s actually a whole pile of bands taking part in the three-day New England Americana Festival, so I’ll briefly profile a few of the bands performing.
