Attention all dreamers: Pisces releases their debut album!

Sarah Negahdari presents us with a magical gift.

Sarah Negahdari presents us with a magical gift.

It’s been a little while since we last checked in with Miss Sarah Negahdari, shamanic banshee of Happy Hollows, rockin’ pop-up bassist extraordinaire for Silversun Pickups and musical sorceress for her own incredibly amazing and breathtaking side project, Pisces. This elfin fairy princess of the Silverlake/Echo Park musical kingdom possesses a giant’s treasure trove of talent.

The long-anticipated debut album from Pisces is a masterpiece. It’s bursting with all the pixie dust otherworldly beauty, gentle pastel swirls of painted horses, unfurled psychedelic fury, acoustic and electric guitar magic and ethereal, angelic voices that define its creator. The first video, “Being With You,” flows as beautifully and dives as deeply as the song that inspired it. Sarah, the woodland creature, kiddie pool princess, conjurer, seashell collector, daydreamer, city dweller, painted unicorn, keeper of the colored orbs, folksinger, whirling dervish, mermaid.

Immerse yourself in the deep, mysterious waters of Pisces and support this fine, fine artist.

Pisces (Sarah Negahdari) presents us with a gift of a Winter Horse

From the inimitable Sarah Negahdari is a song offering from her beautiful side project Pisces. Called “Winter Horse,” it was first premiered on Buzz Bands in late January. Needless to say, it’s every bit as magical as her main gig with The Happy Hollows and her “fill in work” last year with Silversun Pickups. Charlie Mahoney and Chris Hernandez of The Happy Hollows add their magic on bass and drums. It was engineered and produced by Joel Morales and David Newton. Just awesome.

The (Infamous) Eastside L.A. 2013 Midyear Round-up! (part III)

Rademacher, August 2012

It's a mystery what happened to Rademacher, but I hope they ride into L.A. magically around Echo Park Rising time this month for a 'sekrit show'

What started with a small and serene handful of indie bands has become a busy army of multicolored, many-tentacled octopi. Yes, it’s time for the third installment in my four-part Eastside L.A. midyear band round-up. If you’re wondering what Pisces (Sarah Negahdari), Pretty Flowers, Princeton, Radar Brothers, Radars to the Sky, Rademacher, Robert Francis, Sara Radle, Seasons, Sea Wolf and Shadow Shadow Shade have been up to, read on.

The Happy Hollows ~ “Endless” (from upcoming new album!)

How I love this Eastside L.A. band, and this new song foretells wonderful things about The Happy Hollows’ upcoming album, Amethyst, which is due out July 30 on Pesky Fruit Music. According to Pinpoint Music, the album was recorded with producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Fools Gold) at Black Iris studios in Echo Park and Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles, and apparently they’ll be introducing some synth and drum machine sounds into the mix with Sarah’s delicious guitar shredding. Sounds interesting! For now, here’s “Endless” — and stay tuned! Here’s hoping for some East Coast tour dates when Amethyst comes out…

Seeing Out The Year That Was: My 12 Favorite Shows of 2012

A last minute addition: The Magnetic Fields at Symphony Hall for First Night (last night)

A last minute addition: The Magnetic Fields at Symphony Hall for First Night (last night)

It’s a good thing I held off posting this, because I’ve just made it an even dozen in honor of the year that just flew by, 2012. The last one? A band I had the immense pleasure of seeing for the first time, on First Night just last night at the majestic Symphony Hall. [Why do they call it “First Night”? Shouldn’t it be “Last Night”?]

I saw a total of 24 shows this year. Not a whole lot for a music blogger, but I’ll tell you—nearly all of them were spectacular. That’s damn good odds. I’ve heard some people say that 2012 was an awful year. What I’ll say, from my personal perspective, is this: 2012 was a year of massive challenges and difficulties, but the rewards, if you were prepared to step up, and I mean step up in a major way, were equally impressive. It was most definitely not a year for lightweights. But it’s all moving forward, and it’s moving forward quickly. Hold on to something sturdy, because I have a feeling 2013 is going to be just as intense. Remember, with challenge comes opportunity. Happy New Year, everyone.

Introducing Pisces, the Softer, Mystical Side of Sarah Negahdari

The magnificent Sarah Negahdari, best known as mad sorceress and guitar shredder for Eastside L.A. band The Happy Hollows, has a side project called Pisces, where she shows off her sweeter, spacier side with some lovely ethereal pop. Joining her is Charlie Mahoney on bass and Chris Hernandez on drums, with production by Joel Morales. They’ve just released their debut EP, Flower Toes.

Have a listen below (and buy it!), and if you’re in the area, experience it live and help them celebrate at their release show on Friday night (6/22) at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts, with Little Red Lung. ::: facebook event :::

Continuing on with part II of my Eastside L.A. Bands 2012 Roundup. Again, I’m only including artists who either are doing significant touring this year, or who have a new album just out, very recently out, or are working on something. If I’ve missed anyone or something big, please let me know. I’m going to bed now. Goodnight and good luck.

While they’re not going to be stopping in Boston (truly a bummer, but they did try and couldn’t get anything scheduled), the awesome Happy Hollows will be crossing the great expanse to play a few shows here on the East Coast. If you’re not familiar with these guys yet, what are you waiting for? They’re pretty and ethereal, crazy and experimental, mystical and kinda whimsical as well.

Review: The Happy Hollows ~ “Spells”

SpellsArtwork1

What I had in mind was a review of The Happy Hollows’ NEW release Spells, rather than an article of historic interest. Before we’re into a new year, let me just do this. The Happy Hollows – Sarah Negahdari, Chris Hernandez, and Charles Mahoney – are quite incredible live, but to truly appreciate the range of Sarah’s expressive vocals, the cornucopia of moods and styles, and fun/ferocious experimentation, you have to sit down at leisure with their amazing debut album, Spells. Which I finally did, jotting down my initial impressions upon hearing it, uninterrupted and at the forefront of my spinning but focused mind. I’m not promising that any of this will make any sense whatsoever, so I’ll summarize: they’re wonderful, it’s hard to believe this is just their first full-length release, and you should buy one. You should also see them, when they come back around. I felt privileged to be at T.T. The Bear’s that night.
